Chapter Eleven
My ears strained against the silence of the night, but I wanted to be sure NIb was asleep before I tried to send Flitter out into the night. Once I was certain the only sounds were the creaking of the house in the wind, I slipped out of bed and padded towards the small window. It wasn't big enough to fit through myself, but it would be more than adequate for Flitter to fit through, and that was the most important thing.
The window swung open with ease, and I breathed a sigh of relief. There had been a small part of me that worried I wouldn't be able to get it open, or that Nib had somehow boarded it shut. Other than the situation with Mr Muldvarp, she was being perfectly nice to me, and had given me everything I needed. And yet, there was something about this whole situation which stopped me from trusting her.
Perhaps I'd been a fool to accept her help in the first place. But what choice had I had? I'd been cold, lost, and hungry. That wasn't a good combination at the best of times, and I'd had the worst day too.
Cool air blew in from the window. I closed my eyes and breathed in the cool air. This was probably the longest amount of time I'd spent indoors, and it was nice to have fresh air again.
I was about to turn and get him, when Flitter flew up and around me. He was much better than he had been, and flying seemed easier.
"Do you think you're ready to fly further?" I whispered to him, not wanting to speak any louder in case I was wrong about Nib being asleep.
He bobbed up and down in a gesture which I assumed must have meant yes. I wished we'd spent more time together so I could get to know some of the way he communicated better, but it seemed that wasn't going to be the case.
I took a deep breath to help me come to terms with what I had to do. For all I knew, sending Flitter to find Trent for me would result in me going from a hot skillet into the fire. There must have been a reason he chose to follow me the other day, and I was certain it wouldn't be completely altruistic. I wasn't anything special, after all. Just a girl with good instincts on how to stay alive. Though I wasn't doing a stand-up job at that right now.
"I need you to go find Trent," I whispered to him. "Tell him..."
I trailed off as a creak outside my door caught my attention. I froze in place, waiting to be certain no one was waiting outside to catch me in the act of sending Flitter out. Nib didn't seem to like fairies, and Mr Muldvarp seemed to like them too much, and would probably see this as confirmation of my fairy blood. I don't even know what he wants it for.
